FPV video channel assignments

We will exclusively be using the 5.8Ghz frequency band for fpv video. All multirotors must be equipped with a raceband compatible video transmitter, with a maximum power of 250mW.

Base stations will be provided at the event. You will be able to connect to them either via a standard audio/video jack (supplied, connects straight to fpv goggles) or an RCA cable (that you will have to supply to connect to fpv screens).

We have made a selection of 6 channels to have the best possible video, minimizing cross channel interference due to harmonics and intermodulation distortion. Here are the channel specification for each pilot:

Please pre-set you multirotor(s) to the specified requirements before the event. You will be required to plug in your quad and prove that you are on the right channel to check in (we will have a screen set-up to that effect at the check-in desk). You will not be checked in until you have the right antenna and the right channel.

If your channel/polarization does not suit you,  here are a few options:

  • Create a post on the Drones Montreal Facebook page, maybe someone can swap with you!

  • Buy the correct antenna polarization, vendors will carry some on site if you can't find anything beforehand.

If you are using a vortex pro, you will be asked to show that it is on it’s ‘low’ power setting (not ‘auto’ or ‘high’, settable in the OSD). We will not allow the stock 285 Vortex vtx. If you have a 285 vortex, please consider equipping it with another vtx (following for example these instructions http://www.nghobbies.com/tag/vortex-replacement-vtx/)

Transponder system

For timing we will be using the ilaps infrared transponder system. We advise that you bring your own transponder, but we will also be lending them out before each race. The transponders have a standard 3-pin servo connector and need to be powered on 5V. You can for example power them through a spare motor channel on your flight controller or through a BEC with a male servo connector. It needs to be mounted horizontally on the quad, pointing left. Here is a picture of the transponder:

Multirotor specification

6 inch (152 millimeter) diameter maximum propeller size

3-bladed and 4-bladed propellers allowed

Maximum frame size 330 millimeter motor to motor, no minimum size

Multirotor craft with 3, 4 or 6 motors

4S maximum LiPo battery, maximum 4.2 volts per cell

Organisation

The smooth running of the event relies on the pilots being ready and organised. The biggest amount of time usually lost during events is during the switchover periods, and this is why we ask everyone to already be on the right channels at the start of the day. However, loaning out and recovering transponders takes time. We therefore ask you to be ready 2 races in advance and install the transponder during the race before you. Assuming you are in race 4:

During race 2: get your gear ready and move towards the pilots tent

During race 3: receive your transponder, install it and be ready for the upcoming race

During race 4: fly!

After race 4: Recover your machine and return your transponder

Unless exceptional circumstances occur, switchover time will be kept to 5 minutes. Should a pilot not be ready after 5 minutes, the race director may give him a 1 minute grace, after which the race will start, irrespective of that pilot’s state.

For both qualifiers you will have 2 chances and we will keep your best effort. The IDRA qualifier will be held as a maximum of laps in 2 minutes, while the Drone nationals qualifier will be ranked based on your 3 fastest consecutive laps. Time allowing, we will also hold an elimination race (quarterfinals, semifinals etc.) between the top pilots for prizes. Please consider bringing both left hand and right hand antennas for the elimination races, as we will need to shuffle the pilot channels around.

Please note that only Canadians or Canadian residents are eligible for the qualified positions.

Please be at the event latest at 9.00am on Saturday June 25th for pilot check-in. All pilots will have 1 practice session, and then 2 chances towards each qualifier, so a minimum of 5 rounds on the track in total. Power outlets will be available for charging but we advise you bring enough batteries.

Here is a rough schedule, it will be each pilot's responsibility to keep track of the course of the event not to miss their race.

09:00  : Pilot check-in

10:00 : Pilot meeting

10:30 : Practice run of all groups

12:30 : Student race

13:30 : IDRA NA cup qualifier rounds 1 and 2 (total number of laps in 2 minutes)

17:30 : Drone worlds qualifier rounds 1 and 2 (best 3 consecutive laps)

21:00 : Time allowing: showdown race between top qualified pilots

21:30 : Gates close, teardown

MAAC

You will be receiving your MAAC number in the days before the event, but you will still need to sign a document during checkin to finalize the membership.
